1. COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course covers management concepts and responsibilities in the Housekeeping division of mid-to- large properties, including models for staffing patterns. It examines inventory and equipment management, characteristics of materials and supplies, linen and laundry room management, and cleaning functions. This subject aims at providing operational views and practices in every section of Housekeeping Department in a hotel. Both front of the house and back of the house cleaning practices are examined. It also introduces the concept of laundry and the role of housekeeping staff in safety and security.
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to explain the role and responsibilities of Housekeeping as well as the organization of the department in different lodging contexts and describe the interactions needed between Housekeeping and other hotel departments. Students should be able to explain the organization of the laundry department as well as the organization of the housekeeping department and execute the cleaning procedures.
Concepts will be delivered through lectures supplemented with discussions of case studies in tutorials. Visits to housekeeping departments in hotels will be arranged in order to enhance students’ understanding and to give them an insight into actual housekeeping operations. Videos on guestrooms and public area cleaning exercises will also be used to facilitate learning.
The main objectives of the course are to: Help to prepare students to meet the challenges associated with the housekeeping department; Provide an overview of the key issues of housekeeping and maintenance management; To understand the theoretical and practical knowledge that constitutes the work of housekeeping; To illustrate the complexities and demands of working in the industry through the scope of housekeeping; Provide the student with the competencies to function professionally within the housekeeping department.
